A community Health Dept. was started in 1975 for the integral development of the people around the hospital with new projects and programmes like “Project Silver Hills”, which provided toilet facilities, environmental sanitation and health care consciousness to the poor people of the locality. ‘Vikas Welfare centre’ was started in 1977, as an extension of the community Health Dept. for better co-ordination and continuation for the community health and development programmes. This community Health Department is functioning well, with six full time staff and 30 trainees taking care of the basic health needs of 20 villages around the hospital covering a population of 4000. This centre has an objective of empowering people for positive health through Health Education, immunization programmes, aids awareness etc.

Women’s development is taken care through vocational training like tailoring, embroidery and credit unions etc. Family Welfare Program and various organizations like Mahila Samajam, Suhrud Sangam and Balajana sakhyam are functioning well under the leadership of Community Health Department. The community health program that we started in 1975 is the first one of its kind in the private sector in Kerala and people have been visiting this centre for exposure and experience and practical knowledge of its functioning.
